About Ocean Conservation Namibia
How It All Started -The OCN Story
Namibia is home to a thriving Cape fur seal population of roughly one million individuals along its spectacular coastline. Unfortunately, these seals face a deadly threat: abandoned fishing gear, discarded fishing line, plastic packaging straps, and other marine debris that entangle, injure, and kill countless animals every year.
In 2020, Naude and Katja Dreyer founded the Ocean Conservation Namibia Trust (OCN) with one clear mission: to rescue entangled seals and protect marine wildlife along the Namibian coast. What began as a small, hands-on effort has grown into a global movement. Through direct action, daily rescues, public awareness campaigns, and global and local education, OCN inspires people around the world to change their own habits and protect our oceans for future generations.
Between 2020 and 2025, the dedicated OCN team rescued over 5,000 Cape fur seals from life-threatening entanglements. Rescue operations take OCN to some of Namibia’s most remote and challenging locations — Pelican Point, Cape Cross, Torra Bay, and Möwe Bay in the Skeleton Coast National Park, as well as the wild and beautiful Sandwich Harbour area.
Led by Namibian conservationist Naude Dreyer, who began seal rescues in 2013 at Pelican Point, OCN’s videos have reached millions of people worldwide. Today, more than 5 million followers across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. watch our daily rescue stories. Each view, comment, and share helps spreading awareness about the urgent need for ocean conservation.
OCN receives no government funding. Every rescue is made possible through private donations from around the world and the sale of merchandise. OCN is proudly registered in the United States as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the name Ocean Conservation International.
All contributions to Ocean Conservation International are tax-deductible for U.S. donors.
